Okay, so I finally got up the wherewithal to try the Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda no-shampoo thing (from instructions here) this afternoon.

My hair? Feels niiiiiiice. :)

For various reasons--mostly morning lazies--I backed off on washing my hair from every morning to once or twice a week. It used to be very oily, but the oil production has definitely ramped down. Part of that may be due to age, but it also may be due to less shampooing.

I have a chemistry degree, so I don't tend to have a lot of patience with OMG--The Chemicals! Water's a chemical, and it can kill you, too. But shampoo alternatives are interesting. Hard to get past the propaganda that you need to shampoo most every day. And repeat the process, just to make sure.

Yeah -- I had pretty much gone on a schedule of washing my hair when it needed it for the same reasons, and at this point it needs it only about once a week. Which is good because it's an extra twenty minutes tacked on whatever I'm doing to comb and braid it once it's washed (I have loooong hair).

Heh -- yeah, I doubt living in the place and time I do, I'm going to get away from OMG The Chemicals! completely. Must admit that part of why I'm trying it, aside from the general rave reviews of half of Livejournal, is that shampoo and conditioner are about five bucks a bottle each, and I can get a large bottle of organic cider vinegar and two things of baking soda for eight. Which...saves a very small amount of money, but I expect it'll add up slowly. *g*

I was gonna say... your skin is specifically designed to NOT absorb stuff, so I seriously doubt that shampoo could cause any detrimental effects that way (as the article suggests).

That said, it sounds like a neat idea, probably more environmentally friendly than whatever processing goes into making shampoo, too. ^_^

*wistful* I am so jealous that almost everyone I know who's tried it gets such good results. I'll probably try it again in a few months, after I use up the shampoo I just bought. (And this time I'll make sure to get my hair cut immediately beforehand, so I don't have to get all twitchy about going to see my stylist before things settle down.)

When it works, it really feels *so* good. Chris' hair feels lovely. *^^* I'm glad it's working for you!

I recently wrote an entry how I used baking soda and boiling water and let it set in my thermos over night and it dissolved all the tea buildup. It sounds that's what this combination did to your hair. Do you have hard water? It could be that this stripped your hair of buildup. I have a softner so I don't get the mineral buildup in my hair. Also, hair care products can cause buildup too.

I read the other replies. I have such oily skin and oily hair that if I don't wash my hair every day, then my hair is drenched in oil. I feel horrible if I don't take a daily shower, including a shampooing and conditioning.

...yup, that's the point of the exercise. Stripping off the buildup of silicones and so forth that chemical shampoos leave in your hair, and then just getting crud out after that. I know a bunch of people around LJ have tried it, and I'm not sure hard water comes into play.

Read the link. *g* They talk about the oily hair/skin and overproduction and the hows and whys of it all. It's good stuff.

I saw other posts on this, but am too lazy to make my own 'no-poo'. Instead I decided to get organic shampoo.... and noticed an immediate improvement. Since then, I noticed that Nature's Gate also has a non-organic variety (but without all the chemicals) that's cheaper than the chemical-laden stuff I was previously using.

I used to have to wash my hair every 2 days (and my hair only looked so-so on the in-between days), but now I sometimes only wash after 3 or 4 days.

Ooh. Well, if this goes all pear-shaped, I'll have to get down to the natural stuff store and look for that.
