"Due North"

Words today: 800.
Words total: 22,900.
Reason for stopping: Yahtzee!

Books in progress: Farzana Doctor, Six Metres of Pavement.

Draft delivered to the group, and...wow. End of an era, this. There are two more episodes after "Due North", but this is the last one assigned to me.

Goodnight, Charles Villette. Goodnight, Hafidha Gates. Goodnight, Esther Falkner. Goodnight, Solomon Todd and Nicolette Lau.
February 7-12, 2014 Progress Notes:

"Due North"

Words today: 3,500 all told over the past few days, and 1,400 this afternoon.
Words total: 22,100.
Reason for stopping: LEGO movie LEGO movie!

Books in progress: Farzana Doctor, Six Metres of Pavement.

I forget how Shadow Unit stories always, always run long. :p

In any case, less than one scene off the end, and just breaking because I have set plans. Back to this tonight, all's well etc. Couple hundred more words, and this will be a wrap.
February 5-6, 2014 Progress Notes:

"Due North"

Words today: 1,500 yesterday, 700 today.
Words total: 17,200.
Reason for stopping: Getting late, yo. And my hands hurt.

Books in progress: Patrick Ness, More Than This.

Not the kind of wordcount that I would have liked today, but I got hit with a wodge of freelance work and took the afternoon to turn it around. And now my arms have that high-volume typing ache, and we have put away the chili I made tonight for dinner, and there is tea.

Finishing this up tomorrow, maybe. Or Sunday afternoon.
February 4, 2014 Progress Notes:

"Due North"

Words today: 2,500.
Words total: 15,000.
Reason for stopping: It's past midnight, my hands hurt a bit, and I don't want to throw my schedule entirely off.

Books in progress: Patrick Ness, More Than This.

This is what I'm supposed to be writing, and have been in dribs and drabs for months now, between other deadlines. It's being mildly more tenacious than I expected, but today was good progress toward the end.

And otherwise: Currant-cornmeal muffins are just out of the oven, and a loaf of oregano and black pepper bread. It's cold, and I got the itch to bake when P. started dinner tonight. We're going to do a muffin each, play a round of Carcassonne, and hopefully be in bed before it gets too far into morning.
Oh hi there.

So I had to revise On Roadstead Farm a lot, and everything else disappeared (this is starting to resemble a trend, my people). That draft finished up two weeks ago, although there will be at least one more in the offing. So I took some time to answer e-mail and clean the house and throw an amazingly fun seven-person Thanksgiving dinner last Monday night, and then I started on the next job, which is now well in progress:

October 22, 2013 Progress Notes:

"Due North"

Words today: 1650 yesterday, 1000 today.
Words total: 6,900.
Reason for stopping: P. came home, we got to making onion soup, and now it is quite late.

Books in progress: Rainbow Rowell, Fangirl

Announced today, so I can announce it too: "Wild Card", which is a novelette written as part of the Shadow Unit universe (and if you haven't checked ou Shadow Unit, you really should!) will be reprinted in Rich Horton's ne SUPERHEROES anthology!

Superheroes

It's available for preorder at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and should be hitting shelves all over around March 1st.

October 19, 2012 Progress Notes:

"Due North"

Words today: 1,250.
Words total: 1,250.
Reason for stopping: First little burst is out of gas.

Motivational Threat of the Day: None.

Books in progress: Tiffany Trent, The Unnaturalists

As always, abridged metrics when I'm working on Shadow Unit. No spoilers.

This story isn't going up until next June, which means I'm starting it well in advance (well in advance) from when it needs to be started. But we were e-mailing about a different SU thing, and, well, it decided it was here. And I don't argue with stories that say they are here. So maybe I'll throw words on it here and there in the next few months, in a low-key sort of way.

All right. Out for a show tonight. July Talk is releasing their first album, and I am to be there.

Bam.

"Wild Card"

Words today: 1700.
Words total: 12,900.
Reason for stopping: Draft.

Books in progress: Ross Macdonald, The Goodbye Look.

And draft. I had to stay home from an event I really wanted to be at to do it, but it's done, and done well in time. So I'll chalk this up as a Work comes first sort of thing, and roll right into the next project once dinner's made.

Phew.

Almost done, here.

It is stupid hot today: the kind that makes you woozy and tired even when you're inside. And that's my grand master plan for dealing with it, really: staying inside. Also, cooking a lot of cold things that are cold. So far, working out well.

To that end, totally blowing off three events in favour of staying inside, writing a bit, making jerusalem artichoke fries, and possibly watching some movies with a compatriot. My extrovert is only rated up to 30 degrees Celcius, apparently, and the apartment has AC.

Fwump.

Words today: 1900.
Words total: 9500.
Reason for stopping: Time to head out to my afternoon appointment.

Books in progress: Ross Macdonald, The Far Side of the Dollar.

Written in a midtown coffeeshop, between midtown things to do. Population of this Starbucks: high school students studying for exams, retirees, office workers stopping in for takeout, or lunch, or whatever. Not a freelancer or a glimpse of plaid in sight. This plug, and this table, has been mine uncontested since 11:15 this morning.

This is looking like it might just come in at the estimated wordcount. And soon. Woot woot. :)

Words total: 6500.
Reason for stopping: Time to meet the people for the dinner and then the concerts.

Books in progress: Ross Macdonald, The Chill.

Somehow, in between a whole bunch of errands in the morning/afternoon and lunch and heading out shortly to see some bands, my daily word requirement.

I still have no idea what sets I'm catching tonight, but expect a report of fabulousness when I get home.

"Wild Card"

Words total: 5500.
Reason for stopping: Ice cream! We want it.

Books in progress: Ross Macdonald, The Chill.

So yes: mostly authoring today -- interviews, and some admin stuff, and then a bunch of words. And a small trip to the farmer's market at the foot of my street this afternoon, so let's add the following to our Week 1 groceries:

1 jar wildflower honey
1 pint strawberries
1 pint raspberries
2 bunches spinach that are giant and lovely and ohgodspinachIloveyou
1 rack lamb
1 pint cherry tomatoes

I have already been into said strawberries. Mm.

And now, yes, we're going to get some ice cream. Because there's lots of healthy things in this house, but none of them are ice cream.

"Wild Card"

Words today: 1400.
Words total: 4900.
Reason for stopping: It's midnight, and I was hit-the-ground-running by ten this morning, so I am kind of tired and going to bed to read noir books.

Books in progress: Ross Macdonald, The Galton Case.

Among other things, today was the first day of summer CSA (and the crowd cheers: CSA! CSA!). That means the season of fridge austerity, when I tried to eat my freezer soup and not buy groceries for a week or so, is now over, to be replaced by the season of:

4 stalks rhubarb
1 head lettuce
1 quart field greens
1 quart jerusalem artichokes
1 kale
1 bunch spring onions
1 bunch beets
6 duck eggs
6 chicken eggs
1/2 pound chanterelle mushrooms

And bought as extras:

1 bunch asparagus
1 bunch carrots

Yes, we are going to attempt CSA blogging again. Let's see if my attention span and my camera software hold out this time.

And...go!

Hee.

It's been raining off and on today, so I've been writing, and then snacking, and writing, and doing dishes, and cooking, and writing, and writing. I will say two things about this:

1) I love it when the solution to my plot problem is something we set up as a character quirk three years ago;
2) I am making myself laugh with my own hilarious.

You may laugh too, or not, when this comes out. But rest assured, one of us is having fun.

As ever, no darlings or mean things on this one, because it's shared universe work, and thus spoilers can happen.

Today I was feeling kind of coldy and tired, so I blew off the places I said I'd be and spent the day under the blanket on the couch, working. Quantities of work got done such that I should maybe make Midweek Sickday a regular thing. I mean, I'm obviously still up working until two in the morning, as seems to be my routine these days, but I'm feeling a lot better about it than I have for the last week and change.

Also, it is once again the second day after a yoga class. My thighs would like you all to know that if my life had a face, they would punch it.

Words total: 14,200.
Reason for stopping: Draft.

Books in progress: Kendare Blake, Anna Dressed in Blood.

Cut a lot finer than I'd like, but it ballooned on me in a kind of unexpected way. In any case: done.

And we here at the Treehouse need dinner, badly.

Words total: 11,050.
Reason for stopping: Staying up much later would be a not-good plan.

Books in progress: Tristan Hughes, Eye Lake.

And it's not November anymore. Which means, aside from the whole thing where all the moustaches are supposed to disappear like now, I fully expect this sudden blast of overwork to vanish too. I have a lot of expectations, though, so we'll see how that works out.

(I did, surprisingly enough for a day when I worked until 8pm, get a wicked lot done.)

Stuff afoot, but I'll mention it tomorrow. Now I need to get into bed here.

"Five Autopsies"

Words today: 1,100.
Words total: 9,650.
Reason for stopping: Work tomorrow! Sleeeeep! Yawn!

Books in progress: Tristan Hughes, Eye Lake.

This is what we term "skating a deadline". It is not a thing we advise you to do at home. It is the late November, and as usual for this time of year, I suddenly have way too much to do, not enough hours or brainpower to do it, and that kind of fluttery feeling in my chest as all those little things to do rush at me and pixelate and fragment.

Lucky for you? I'm used to it. And it'll be tight, but it'll get done on time. This thing is well out of the place of actual creating, and into the place of sutures and string and the tying-up of the ends.

(And one of these days I need to figure out why it's always this month that explodes on me. Seriously. Half of why I never did NaNo is because which genius put it in November?)

Bed. More triple axles to pull tomorrow if this is to go according to plan.
