Garden, Abbreviated, at the Ides of July

Today is apparently my day to spam LJ. Behold my produce pictures!

This week has brought the first actual eaten produce of the garden year. That is my first pea, which came off the plant because it was so heavy it was probably going to snap the stem of the pea plant. Into my mouth it went. Nom nom nom.
The second there is the first radish, which I noticed peeking aboveground this afternoon when I went to put some stakes out for the new bean plants.
They both taste decidedly different than their supermarket brethren: the pea (and a bean, which I didn't take a picture of) tasted very green, essence-of-green in different ways I can't quite describe. The radish was crazy spicy. Shockingly, deliciously spicy.

There are other beans coming out as we speak; about nine of them on my three starter plants. Here is one!

This is the newest planter, strategically located atop the balcony railing by virtue of a groove in its centre that lets you rest it there without having to worry about anything falling down. I put the seeds in the ground here about...last Sunday? And once the first good rainstorm hit on Wednesday/Thursday, those beans in the back shot up like they had a deadline. In the front are four more pea plants, just coming up, and the two green things right at the back are a pair of cucumbers.
I'm probably going to score another of these planters and get some carrots and more radishes in the ground. And maybe some lettuces. Mmm, lettuces.
