"The Girl From Another World", my dual-barrelled take on grubby apartments and genre conventions, is live this week at Strange Horizons.

Research for the Sekrit Project is sometimes a daunting thing. You find out with startling detail how many well-known victims of well-known crimes were pregnant at the time, or had violence against them start while they were pregnant. While I know this feeds into the Patriarchy-sponsored notion that violence against women who are pregnant being worse implies that violence against women who aren't is somehow better, it's...just foul. Really, really foul.

I am trying to find the psychological tripwire that does this in people's heads, that makes them want to beat on pregnant women or kill them, and I can't wrap my head around it. That in and of itself might be a worthwhile thing to leave open. Just...ugh.

Project half done, though. One of these months the Partner in Crime and I will get this one out the door. *g*
