Checked my website stats tonight and apparently someone got there after googling "summary of Playing the Dozens by Leah Bobet".

This is sort of baffling. I mean, not the part where it's a 2000-odd word story -- I'm now intensely curious what someone wanted a summary of a nearly five-year-old story for. Usually when people google for summaries it's 'cause they don't want to read for class...is it being taught in some high school somewhere and people don't want to do their homework?

I burn to know.

Also, it seems I am marginally in the current issue of On Spec. My name's on the cover, but no story inside: I expect it was a design oopsie or converting text from an old cover. I get pub credits without even having to write the fiction now! Cool!

(As you can tell, I'm sort of tickled by this.)

Publishing, as they say, it is weird.

Yes, they mentioned the oopsie on their blog. I thought maybe it might have been an excerpt from your hidden Toronto stuff, only really well hidden :)

Hee, yes -- you have to take the first letter of every paragraph, convert it into numbers, run it through a few equations... *g*

technically, you're just *on* this copy of On Spec, not in it. :)

Congratulations!

I, on the other hand, was annoyed: "Hey! It's On Spec! With Leah! Cool! What story? ... .... !!!! [stompy Mris]"

Eek, stompy Mris! *hides*

(I am picturing this as involving eighteen-hole black lace up boots.)

I know exactly how you feel - I had the same reaction when a psyche class at Santa Barbara used some of my articles in an abnormal psyche discussion/paper - I got all weirded out, particularly when I saw myself in citation. EWWWW

Well...I've had things taught and that was cool -- "Displaced Persons" was part of course material at a teacher's college and I was to answer student questions (which never materialized, but oh well). Then I felt like a Big Girl Writer.

But...being someone's homework that they're trying to cheat on or something?

Ewwwwwwwwwww.

Ain't that the truth.

Time to update your bio in new and creative ways!

It's better than getting rejections for stories you haven't written. *sigh*

That is true. Which...well, would be a different creepy.

"Leah, that thing with the pirates? Just...don't. Love, Ed."
