So, the ISP repairman guy has come and gone. He got the modem to actually go online. However? Still no internets.

Now the computer will not acquire an IP address.

I spent an hour on the phone with tech support doing much unplugging and plugging of cables, tried to renew the IP (which wouldn't work -- it can't contact the server to do that), cleaned out all the dust from the machine, tried to connect the modem via USB cable instead of ethernet, etc. The ISP tech support people pretty much said "well the modem's working, not our problem" despite this all happening because I switched to their new modem. It is suggested this might be an issue with the ethernet card.

Before I spend (too much) money on getting someone to come in and fix whatever the hell's wrong and/or fall down, kick at the floor, and cry from frustration, anyone more technically ept than I am have any ideas towards a diagnosis?

I will try to check this again tonight.

Any help deeply appreciated. I've already lost three days of work and have that helpless anxious feeling in the middle of my chest.

Are all the TCP/IP settings default? Set to DHCP under advanced when you right click on the network thing and go to properties?

... it's a PC not a Mac, right? (If it's a Mac I'd actually be more help...)

There are no proxy settings in Internet Explorer (under tools... options/preferences/LAN Settings or something) that could be irrelevant now are there?

Other than this I really don't know without knowing the ISP... who are they?
