So. I'm editing and stuff. Making progress. Feeling good.
And then my characters finally see fit to inform me that one of the things I thought was just a dropped thread to be cut out is, in fact, an entire layer of the novel. And it's fundamental. And it explains close to everything about Our Protagonist being the way she is, and several other people being the way they are for that matter. It explains everything. This is good on one level: it's sure as hell going to make a better, richer book. I probably will not regret the work in five years' time if/when this book shows up on a shelf and sucks less than it could have.
However: I have to go back to the freaking beginning again. These things need to be seeded in so they don't appear from nowhere. The entire middle of the book will need its floorboards ripped up and tinkered with. Relationships will change. Elements of the ending will change. I mean, they couldn't have told me this on the first draft? Or at least after I finished the second and maybe had to go back for a third anyways?
I officially fucking hate revising, and my characters are all getting a big spork in the eye. Spork!
