The Shape of Things
Mar. 23rd, 2004 08:14 pmSick, kind of sniffly, and chilly tonight. I slept more than I had any right to, today, and that seems to have helped a lot; my head's feeling clearer than it has in a while, and I'm actually up to doing some writing. Of course, it'll have to be 2000 words today, because I skipped yesterday in favour of goofing around, signing and packing up some contracts, popping open my much-hoarded bottle of '99 Pinot Noir, and some cooking/cleaning/etc.
Yesterday was my first day working at Planet Aid, and so far it's looking somewhat more interesting than the usual retail grind. It's a small store and there are plenty of things to do to keep one busy besides loiter behind the counter. It's also in a three-story old house on Yonge Street, and the sheer prettiness of the environment is making me happy. Not to mention the people I've met so far seem to...they're doing things with their lives. They're not just "sales associate" or whatnot: they have projects and lives and interests outside work. That's so nice. :) I'm in again on Friday night, and looking forward to it for more reasons than the obvious need for income.
(And wow, have I mentioned how nice it is knowing I have a dependable income again, and don't have to rely totally on the
sandwichboy to keep my fridge full? Ahhh... :) )
Other than that, have been keeping at 1000 words a day on the Toronto book, or a little more some days. It's at about 32,000 words in MS Word words, and about 40,000 and change in SMF. And yet, and yet...I think I'm just finding the core of the thing. Our Heroine has made a logical leap that even I hadn't made, and we're back into muddling through uncharted territory, just we're attacking the point now instead of circling it. I sense that the second draft of this book will involve a lot of cutting to put it into focus.
So I'm off to make a list of things I need to do, to get my 2000 words, and to pray the Leafs get it together and come back from yet another 3-goal deficit. Because at this point we really need to beat Tampa.
