I liked the early Blakes. Paper-thin plots, but Anita had a life--female friends whom she cared about, cop friends whom she cared about and who cared about her. What I felt were nice crime scene touches--the displays of dark humor that make the unbearable bearable, some genuine tension and horror. The books started to lose that, imho, when Anita became all monster all the time.
