It's Victoria Day, and I bought myself an eggplant seedling this afternoon. This calls for...a Garden Post!
We'll start off with the inside stuff, and work around to the outdoor.
These are, from left to right, oregano, common thyme, and a mint. The mint is leaning because it's not in the best spot for sunlight, and I will move it as soon as I pick a pot that's appropriate. I may need to get a new pot.
The second one is the sage and the basil, both fat and happy.
The lavender stands alone, the lavender stands alone, high ho a' derry-o...
(This one, unlike my last lavender, which perished sadly in the winter, is edible.)
This is the mess of plants that sit just to the right of my computer screen, on the ledge behind my desk. You can just see the tip of a white-out pen sticking up into the picture at the centre bottom.
In order, they are my African violet, an ivy which is mostly spilled onto the ledge in front of the pot (and working its way backwards and around onto my desk, actually) and a jade plant. Behind the jade plant is a pot that once had two avocadoes, but one died badly and I trimmed them both; the one on the right is putting out new branches. Then the rosemary, staked up on a bright red knitting needle I never use, and an empty pot which awaits whatever I put into it. You can also see some of the avocadoes I'm starting in water off to the left.
There's also a close shot of the violet there, because I keep mentioning it has bloomed terrifically and never posting a picture. So there you go: terrific violet!
Okay, we're outside now. This is my new eggplant seedling, subvariety Black Magic, which has just been installed in a nice sunny place on the balcony railing.
Here is the grey balcony planter, well along in its plantery development. The big fluffy green dude at the front of both pictures is a pea plant, and behind it/beside it is my biggest bean; the beans just started showing up this weekend. You can see them coming up along the back of the planter.
The smaller sprouts are radishes and Boston lettuce; you can tell by the stems. The red ones are the radishes.
This is the limited activity going on in the green planter, next to the grey planter. Mostly peas at this point. I'm not sure if this is a sunlight thing -- last time I didn't have this planter up until July -- or if I need to get some good compost/fertilizer into the soil here.
And this is some of the view off my balcony about half an hour ago. Right now the trees are crazy golden with sunshine, and the sky is blue, and it's a lovely day to have a garden. :)
Major planting happens in the other windowboxes and fake raised beds next weekend, I think. And then we will be in business.

I really jumped the gun this year and planted like...three weeks ago. You're actually not supposed to start until this week or next.

Especial envy because the CBC has been berating us all smugly for planting before Victoria Day weekend on the two occasions there's been frost danger, and the people on

I just sorta had this vague idea this winter that, now that I have my own place, it would be really fun to try to grow stuff. Then I started trying to learn how to cook and I was all "must grow fresh herbs! and tomatos! and strawberries!' And then all of a sudden I realized it was not only warm but HOT and ppl starting posting pics of growing things and talking about growing things and I thought "hmmm...I should probably start growing stuff soon."
And then I finally started to do the research that I should have done months ago and I realized that I was already approaching beyond late when it came to trying to grow anything that was not already growing.
So now I have growing things, but only because I bought them that way. I have very little hope that the seeds I planted the other day will become seedlings*. But niece and nephew will still enjoy spritzing them with water a few times a day while I am away.
*with the exception of the APPLE TREE seedlings that I found already growing in the apple I was eating yesterday. those seem to be doing just fine. too bad I have no place for a grown-up apple tree.

I may have to post pics of mine in response. Although really, I should spend the time instead properly planting my tomatos so that they won't tip over the pot by the time I pick them up from my mom in about a week.
