Oh, parity indeed

I finally realized the upside of the dollar being worth $1.10 USD.

All those American friends and acquaintances who made that "oh, so it's five bucks here -- that's like a million bucks Canadian right?" joke? For years? The joke that was never damn well funny and in fact served to piss off every Canadian listening behind their gritted-teeth smiles?

Who's laughing now? *g*

(Your problem-solving hint: it is me.)

World Fantasy was 1.1 times better because of parity, too ;)

Heh heh heh.

Jana and Karina mentioned they got some sweet deals on books. *g*

What do I need with a retirement fund? I've still got a Canadian twenty in my wallet.

A far-sighted investment, sir.

Why'd you edit?

[identity profile] leahbobet.livejournal.com 2007-11-11 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Reconsidered calling my friends and acquaintances jackasses. It's a little uncalled-for.

Well, but it is Saturday night, after all...

Heh, so nobody would notice? *g*

Oh yes. It cometh hard.

Totally totally agree - and I'm not even Canadian! I read about Canadian WalMarts lowering their prices to match US prices and I just about died. XD Even here in (fairly-)liberal Bayarealand we get a lot of arrogant, "Well, we're AMERICA, so THERE," type posturing and while I love my country, I'm really glad to see that attitude get a swift kick in the teeth. XD (Of course, it'll probably mean that I won't be bringing back home as much swag from my next trip to Canada - whenever that is! x.x - but that's a minor issue for me. XD;;;)

Apparently World Fantasy in 2009 is going to be in San Jose. I might be down in your direction then...

Awesome! If you come, and the (US) dollar continues at this rate, you'd probably be able to buy San Jose! XD

I don't wish any ill on anyone else...but I did giggle at this. ;)

I... may have used the phrase "oh, well, it's only US DOLLARS" a few times recently.

Mine are hid. I have about...$75 USD lying around in its Safe Place (tm) from con leftovers and various poetry sales that pay in cash, and I'm just sitting on it until the next time I'm in the US.

Bookmarks I go through like they're going out of style. *g*

I'm only reading one fiction at a time these days, but then there's also textbooks. I'm using...some free bookmarks from various bookstores (Toronto Women's, work, Indigo) and my voter notification card from the provincial election last month, and...a promotional postcard for a clothing designer that I picked up a year ago at a craft show. I need things of a certain stiffness, it seems.

yes, when i was buying some etsy purchases today and my price went down instead of up, i may have said something rude yet joyful ;)

Hee. Well, none of the Brits have ever called my currency Monopoly money and thought I should laugh along, so I have no quarrel. *g*

Actually, I first heard that joke in rapid joke format, from Mark and the others. I wasn't very savvy about the exchange rate when I came up in '02 (a low year apparently) and thought they were equal. I got inundated about the situation very quickly. I believe Mark referred to it as the 'Canadian peso'. I only started making similiar jokes, though to be honest the topic didn't come up very often, when it was clear that it was okay with the people around me.

Mark's comment 'We needed to give you something to joke about, you guys gave us Dubbya, we don't even have to try to make jokes about him'.

[identity profile] kmkibble75.livejournal.com 2007-11-11 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's startling just how efficiently the current regime has destroyed the dollar. We'll know we're f-cked when it's worth less than a peso.

[identity profile] leahbobet.livejournal.com 2007-11-11 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
See, if you said that with a laugh at the end like "ha ha, the peso, not real money" then the Mexican internets will have taken note, and when this happens, the joke, it will be on you.

Although the idea of begging Mexican day-shoppers to come through that fence and spend their hard-earned currency to bolster the tourism economy also fills me with the laughter of long-awaited irony.

I really, really wish it were a joke, but it's not.

I am not too proud to say that the current situation really does scare the crap out of me. I'm not schooled enough in economics to figure out all of the long-term effects of a continued drop, but... I'm not imagining they can be good.

They're not. It gets pretty bad pretty fast, actually.

Forget Russia, China, Iran and other countries dumping dollars, wanting oil paid for in Euros, that sort of thing.

Even shops in the freaking Maldives are refusing to take dollars now.

This is yet another time in my life where I'm glad that I've always learned to live well on a small amount of money--especially as I'm watching that amount get smaller every year even when the amount I'm being paid goes up. :O

Well, they make a lot of their tourism money off playing exchange markets, right?

Yeah, one of the writers I was talking to this weekend at work was saying how she's making more than ever before, but it's worth less than it's ever been. And how frustrating that is.

[identity profile] chang3002.livejournal.com 2007-11-11 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I for one welcome our new Canadian overlords.

Incidentally, Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet did a great song called "Five American Six Canadian." And they were from Toronto. Go figger...

The dollar is so fucking pathetic along with every other government institution that I can hardly stand it. Let me ask you this? Will I get as much shit if I move to Canada from the USA as I did moving from Massachusetts to Maine? Because they hate people from Massachusetts here. I'm thinking I might do better in Canada. Tronno, maybe? Montreal? Mais ma francais est tres mal. Maybe Megasquid and I could go around as some sort of weird scifi clown duo without any actual clown skills.

Well, as long as yu and your'n come down our way to do lots of yoga, I'm fine.

Snerk.

Oh, and hee.

(Though to tell the truth, it kind of sucks for me. I have Well-Off Relatives who like to spoil me in the US, and they've been sending cash. It HURT to lose that thirty bucks. I could have bought books food booze cleaning supplies with that!
